How to Use the Calculator

Enter (or drag the slider to) the number of questions you answered correctly in each section: Reading & Writing has 54 questions across its two modules, and Math has 44. The calculator converts each raw score into an estimated scaled score from 200 to 800, rounded to the nearest 10 points — the same increments College Board uses — and adds them for an estimated total between 400 and 1600.

Where do your raw numbers come from? The most reliable source is a full-length practice test: after finishing one in Bluebook or a full practice test on 1600.lol, count your correct answers per section. You can also use the calculator in reverse for goal-setting — slide the inputs until the total matches your target score, and you'll see roughly how many questions you can afford to miss in each section.

One number cannot capture an adaptive test. The estimate here assumes typical module routing; your real score on test day can land roughly 40 points above or below it depending on which second modules you received and how that particular test form was equated. Use the estimate to guide your prep, not to predict a single exact score.

How Digital SAT Scoring Actually Works

Scoring starts simply: every correct answer is worth one raw point, every wrong or blank answer is worth zero, and there is no penalty for guessing. Reading & Writing has a maximum raw score of 54 and Math a maximum of 44. From there, your raw performance is converted to a scaled score of 200–800 per section, and the two section scores add up to your 400–1600 total. The whole test takes about 2 hours 14 minutes.

The conversion from raw to scaled is where the nuance lives. There is no fixed "curve" that applies to every test. Instead, College Board uses equating: a statistical adjustment that accounts for small differences in difficulty between test forms. If your test form happened to contain slightly harder questions than average, the equating process compensates so your scaled score means the same thing as a score earned on an easier form. That's why a 40/44 in Math might convert to a 720 on one administration and a 740 on another.

Equating is not grading on a curve

Your score is never affected by how other students performed on your test day. Equating compares test forms, not test takers — it is calibrated before the test is ever administered. A room full of geniuses cannot lower your score, and a room full of unprepared students cannot raise it.

Not every question moves your score equally

The Digital SAT's scoring model considers question characteristics — including difficulty — when producing your scaled score, rather than treating every raw point identically. Combined with adaptive routing, this means two students with the same number of correct answers can receive different scaled scores if they answered different sets of questions.

Section scores come in 10-point steps

Scaled section scores are always multiples of 10 (200, 210, … 800), so totals are too. There is no such thing as a 1495 — near the boundary, equating rounds you to 1490 or 1500, which is why single questions matter most at the top of the scale.

Module 1 vs. Module 2: How Adaptive Routing Caps (or Unlocks) Your Score

This is the part most score calculators skip, and it's the single biggest reason a raw-score estimate can miss. Each section of the Digital SAT is split into two timed modules. Module 1 is the same mixed-difficulty set for everyone. Module 2 comes in two versions — a harder one and an easier one — and the test decides which you get based on how you performed in Module 1.

Strong Module 1 → harder Module 2

The harder module contains the high-difficulty questions the top of the scale is built on. Only this path can reach an 800 — the full 200–800 range stays open.

Weak Module 1 → easier Module 2

The easier module simply doesn't contain the material needed to demonstrate top-level mastery, so it effectively caps the section score — typically somewhere in the mid-600s — even with a perfect Module 2.

Here's the intuition: your scaled score reflects not just how many questions you answered correctly, but which questions you had the opportunity to answer. A student who aces the easy Module 2 has proven mastery of easy and medium questions — but the test never saw them handle the hardest material, so it cannot award the scores reserved for it. Meanwhile, a student in the hard Module 2 who misses a few brutal questions can still out-score them, because the questions they did answer correctly carry more evidence of ability.

This has two practical consequences for how you should take the test. First, Module 1 accuracy is the gateway to a high score: careless errors early in each section are the most expensive mistakes on the entire test, because they can route you away from the score range you're capable of. Second, if you find Module 2 noticeably harder, that's good news, not bad — it means you performed well enough in Module 1 to unlock the top of the scale.

College Board doesn't publish the exact routing threshold, but you don't need it: treat Module 1 as the place to slow down and verify, and Module 2 as the place to push. A flagged-and-reviewed Module 1 beats a fast one every time.

This is also why this calculator (and every other one) reports an estimate with a range: it can't know which Module 2 you were routed into. A raw score of, say, 35/44 in Math means something different on the hard-module path than on the easy-module path.

Notice the asymmetry at the top: missing 4 questions in Reading & Writing (50/54) costs about 60 points, while missing 4 in Math (40/44) costs about 70. With fewer questions, each Math question simply carries more scaled-score weight — worth knowing when you decide where to invest your prep time.

What Is a Good SAT Score?

"Good" only means something relative to a goal. The most useful benchmark is the middle 50% range — the 25th to 75th percentile of scores among admitted students — that colleges publish for their incoming classes. Broadly, admitted-student score bands cluster into three tiers:

Highly selective colleges

Middle-50% ranges at the most selective institutions typically sit in the high 1400s to high 1500s. At these schools a strong score is an entry ticket rather than a differentiator — being below the 25th percentile means the rest of your application has to work much harder.

Selective and mid-tier universities

Most selective public flagships and mid-tier private universities publish middle-50% ranges somewhere in the 1200–1400 band. Landing at or above a school's 75th percentile can also strengthen merit-scholarship consideration at many of them.

Open- and moderate-admission colleges

Many colleges admit most applicants and treat scores flexibly or as optional; scores around or above the national midpoint (roughly the low 1000s) are competitive. Here a higher score often matters more for placement and scholarships than for admission itself.

Look up the current middle-50% range for each school on your list — colleges publish them in their Common Data Set — and aim at the 75th percentile number. That target, plugged into the calculator above, tells you exactly how many questions per section you can afford to miss.

How to Improve From Your Current Score

The conversion tables above imply a strategy: at every point on the scale, a handful of questions is worth 30–70 scaled points, so improvement is about systematically eliminating your most common misses rather than vaguely "studying more."

1. Establish a real baseline

Take one full-length, timed practice test and run your raw scores through the calculator. Guessing your level from untimed drills reliably overestimates it — pacing pressure and the adaptive structure change how you perform.

2. Drill your weakest topics, not your favorites

Sort your misses by topic, then work the worst ones deliberately. The question bank organizes real-style practice questions by skill for exactly this — turning "I'm bad at math" into "I miss circle questions and comma splices," which is fixable.

3. Protect Module 1

Because routing depends on it, an unforced error in Module 1 costs more than the same error in Module 2. Build the habit of flagging anything uncertain and using leftover module time to re-verify — in practice, not just on test day.

4. Retest and re-measure

Every 2–3 weeks, take another full practice test and re-run the numbers. The raw-score deltas per section tell you whether your drilling is transferring to test conditions, and which section deserves the next block of time.

At most scoring levels, converting 3–4 misses into correct answers per section moves your total by 60–100 points. Framed that way, a 100-point improvement is not "get smarter" — it's "find six or eight specific weaknesses and close them."

Is there a penalty for guessing on the Digital SAT?

No. A blank answer and a wrong answer are scored identically — zero raw points — so you should answer every question. Eliminating even one choice before guessing improves your expected score, and on student-produced response math questions a reasonable guess costs you nothing.
